How is this good?

I literally don't understand how this can be called "good." It's pretentious nonsense. The roles of the women are almost as meaningless & shallow as the plot. What was the purpose of us seeing a father watch his daughter's bizarre porn films like it was normal? Was it suppose to be funny? Were we actually suppose to see it as art? Or was it to have a worse movie inside this movie to trick us into this this was actually good? The entire film was just a boring waste of time.

Perhaps this movie is meant to be satirical. A light-hearted examination of what it means to live the life of a wacky self-obsessed and self-important scultor (Hoffman) and his zany wife (Thompson) and his (not hers: she's his third wife) three troubled children (Sandler, Stiller, Marvel) in the Big Apple. Soft targets? Undoubtedly.

The performers grab their roles and squeeze them for emotional possibilities, except for Marvel who quietly underplays her underwritten role and ends up as someone we feel we might know, or at least want to know. Cameo appearances (Adam Driver, Candice Bergen, Sigourney Weaver) merely contribute to the suffocating sense of self-indulgence ("look who's in my movie). It barely seems possible that this is the writer/diretor of WHILE WE'RE YOUNG and THE SQUID AND THE WHALE. I hope he finds himself again before too long.

A different take of Sandler

In comparison to Adam Sandlers other Netflix films, The Meyerowitz Stories is much greater and with better writing, acting and overall plot. Though this is labeled in some ways a comedy, it is mostly dramatic and somewhat depressing. The acting is great and the chemistry between Sandler, Ben Stiller and Dustin Hoffman work well, which is what elevates the film. Not too predictable but at times boring and feels as of not much is happening. Some critics have called this the "return of Adam Sandler" but the film being featured on Netflix doesn't quite fit a return. Perhaps this film should have went to theaters, as a wide audience could see.

The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), is the closest thing director Noah Baumbach has yet achieved to a departure from these recurrent factors in his work - he has peeled back some of the layers of detached character comedy to offer an emotionally affecting portrait of family life, that in its best moments, manages to be sincerely moving in a manner that feels regulatory for the director. This film has received overwhelming positive reviews from critics despite being a Netflix film.
